The cobblestones of Prague's Old Town were slick with morning rain when I spotted the perfect leather jacket hanging in a shop window no wider than a phone booth. Three minutes later, clutching my prize in a crinkled plastic bag that screamed "tourist," I realized my mistake.

The bag split somewhere between the astronomical clock and the Charles Bridge. My jacket hit the wet stones like a wounded bird.

An elderly Czech merchant, watching from his doorway, shook his head with the patient disappointment of a man who had seen this tragedy play out a thousand times. He disappeared into his shop and returned with something that looked impossibly small in his weathered hands.

"For next time," he said in careful English, pressing it into my palm.

It was nothing more than a folded square of fabric, but when opened, it bloomed into a proper bag that could have held half his inventory.
