The Mountain Road Outside Chamonix
The rental car groaned up the Alpine switchbacks, my three-month-old daughter finally asleep in her car seat after two hours of protest. French drivers, apparently unimpressed by our cautious ascent, swept past us at impossible speeds, horns blaring their disapproval.
At a roadside café, I mentioned this to Marcel, the proprietor, while bouncing the baby and ordering coffee with one hand. He disappeared into his dusty office and returned with a simple yellow diamond-shaped sticker.
"Bébé à bord," he said, peeling off the backing. "Even the craziest Parisian respects this."
He was right. The transformation was immediate. Cars gave us space. Honking stopped. Aggressive tailgating became polite following distance. What had been a white-knuckle journey became almost pleasant.
Sometimes the smallest gestures command the greatest respect.
Baby on Board Car Sticker. A universal symbol that transcends language barriers, quietly requesting the courtesy every parent hopes for on the road.
