The train from Ürümqi to Kashgar rattles through the night like it's settling an old grudge with the tracks. Somewhere past midnight the heater gives up entirely — a diplomatic sort of failure, silent and total. Across from me, an old wool trader wrapped in something the color of dried blood watches me shiver with the patience of a man who has seen a thousand cold foreigners and expects to see a thousand more.
He says nothing. He simply unfolds a second shawl from his pack and tosses it across the compartment like he's dealing cards.
Grey, he says. Or red, if you want the desert to remember you.
I chose red. I have not been properly cold since.
There's a lesson in that carriage, somewhere between the tea glasses and the window frost: comfort doesn't announce itself. It just shows up, folded neatly, waiting for someone smart enough to reach for it.
A generously sized unisex shawl in grey or red. Warm, simple, and endlessly useful — for trains, verandas, or evenings that turn colder than expected.
